This is the e-mail I sent to Karen Benker, the one lone voice of reason on the Longmont City Council, who voted "NO" on the LifeBridge annexation. I also copied the Mayor and the rest of city council: " Karen:I want to thank you for your perseverance, your integrity, and your commitment to the quality of life for Longmont citizens. Your statements last night were accurate and articulate. You can count me in as a Longmont voter who will support you as Mayor for Longmont and who will gladly contribute volunteer hours to getting the message out to the voters of Longmont that you will, as Mayor of Longmont, represent the best interests of the Longmont citizens and not that of a special interest group. The other candidates running either for reelection or Mayor will not receive my vote! I came home from the City Council meeting feeling very down, disillusioned, and frustrated that our Council is moving forward on a project that will benefit LifeBridge and will hurt Longmont, in the long run. I am not a person who resist change; in fact, I often seek and embrace it. However, change must be for the greater good of all. This project does not meet that criterion. To the council members and to the Mayor, who supported this project: I am saddened, dismayed and angry that you ignored the wishes of a large group of concerned citizens and chose to ignore the facts presented. Your minds were made up before you even heard the arguments. What good, then is a Public Forum? Is this just a condescending way of allow the public to vent? It seems because you were weary of dealing with the details and the conflict around this issue, you chose the easier route, acquiesced and caved-in to the pressures from a savvy group of developers. I use to have a rule with my children, that I was not allowed to say "I told you so", down the line, when I proved to be right on something. I will not adhere to this rule with those of you who voted in favor of this project. Down the road, I believe that you will see that the loopholes that are present in this development, will be exercised to the benefit of LifeBridge and to the detriment of the city of Longmont. Then I will say," I told you so", for all the good it will do me. Richard and Doug have updated the web page, and, it looks great! Thanks to both of you. Everyone, be sure to visit it. There is detailed information on the major issues and concerns on annexation of LifeBridge. It is important to have these facts at hand when speaking with people and gathering petition signatures for the Referendum.
