No, don't fret, we're not reorganizing as a bank holding company to access TARP funds. And relative to a lot of other companies our finances are holding up well. But we are considering funding our own micro-bailout ... well, maybe nano-bailout, of one small sliver of the financial services industry.
What am I talking about? We're considering hiring a business and finance reporter-blogger. As you'd probably figure, we're not looking to gin up a TPM version of Squawk Box or have some slicked-back-haired right-winger ranting about zeroing out the capital gains tax or yelling about how undervalued the financial sector stocks are. And business and finance news wasn't something I'd really imagined TPM getting into. But we're already making plans to shift a lot of our TPMmuckraker.com resources to muckraking the financial collapse, the resultant bailout and all the shenanigans and self-dealing and new lobbying gambits. One of the things I most prize about TPM is that we've been able to stay nimble and light enough to be able to focus our resources on where the story is. And there's no getting around the fact that this is now where the story is. Read More »

TPM interns are vital to our operation and have a hand in everything we do. They work alongside our reporters to write and break stories, help our editors keep a finger on the pulse of the news day, and produce all kinds of digital media from youtube clips to mash-up photographs. Some of our interns have gone on to jobs here at TPM, others have moved on to jobs in new and old media alike, working for Think Progress, The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, The New York Sun, The Washington Post and more.
To learn more about what we do at TPM and what we've accomplished in the last year, see these news reports on TPM from 2007.
Because each intern is encouraged to work in multiple parts of our operation, it's important that applicants have a basic understanding of new media technologies (blogging, youtube, etc.) and a desire and ability to learn quickly. We are also looking for one intern who is video specific. This person should have a working knowledge of Final Cut, and be ready and excited to dive into the world of TPMtv. All internships are unpaid and based in TPM's New York City office.

Glenn Greenwald writes on the FISA filibuster by Dodd and Reid's view:
It's one thing to watch Congressional Democrats fail to stand up to any of the Bush abuses. It's another thing entirely to watch as they actively enable them. But they've now moved beyond even that to actually perceiving as their Enemy anyone -- such as "Dodd and his allies" -- who seeks to disrupt their Bush-enabling efforts and, worst of all, who infects their rituals with any dirty, outside riff-raff, such as actual citizens.
But wait it goes to the attitude that the first woman Speaker of the House Nancy Pelos. This was written by Digby:
Though crediting activists for their "passion," Pelosi called it "a waste of time" for them to target Democrats. "They are advocates," she said. "We are leaders."
Uhm, not exactly, Nance. They're citizens. And you work for them. That inconvenient first amendment was put in the constitution so you wouldn't forget that.
We are to vote for Democratic party candidates, get them elected, have majorities in Congress then what? For the Democratic leadership to crap on the voters?
This is what they are saying...Elect us then we will crap all you, the voter, and enable Mr. Bush to destroy the Constitution?
If somebody wants to run in the Democratic Party primary against DeGette I will be the first to contribute and volunteer.
Who will step up?
Spreading freedom is what 'Merica is 'bout so sayeth the Decider in Chief. But when the people of a nation rise up to demand an end to their slavery where is "the rich is my base" Commander Guy?
Thousands of protesters are dead and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle, a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta has revealed.
The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand."
The assessment by Swedish diplomat Liselotte Agerlid:
"People are scared and the general assessment is that the fight is over. We were informed from one of the largest embassies in Burma that 40 monks in the Insein prison were beaten to death today and subsequently burned."
What did the USA do? Basically nothing.
Bush doesn't care about the "freedom" because his meaning of freedom is only about "free markets" nothing more and nothing less. The meaning of freedom:
A political condition that permits freedom of choice and action for individuals and also for individuals and groups to participate in the decisions and operation of the society and the political system.
The shame of how we treat ourselves
German Shepard dogs barking
The cops with mirror sunglasses firing their weapons
To turn back those teeming, desperate people crossing the Gretna Bridge
From the drowned American city called New Orleans
This is the legacy that heralds the new American Century
The seasons pass and longing turns to bitterness
But those who have come to replace them
Ready to raze and replace the old homes in the Ninth Ward
With the shiny and new high rise condominiums for their upper class tastes
The New Orleans diaspora
Read this to act now. Ask Rep. DeGette and Senator Salazar what are they doing to give New Orleans residents the right to return.
Caught this off CO Confidential:
Presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama's Colorado organization is planning anti-war rallies next Tuesday, Oct. 2 with events in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
The "Rallies to Turn the Page in Iraq" recognize a 2002 speech that Obama gave to warn that military action against Iraq could lead to "a U.S. occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences."
Ten days later, on October 11, 2002, the US Senate voted to give the President authorization to go to war in Iraq.
No doubt, there will be more protests planned in Colorado to mark that 5th anniversary date.
