Impeachment Begins! Preliminary Hearing Friday July 25th
By David Swanson www.afterdowningstreet.org
At 10 a.m. on Friday July 25th, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a preliminary hearing in Rayburn Building Room 2141 on the topic of impeachment, with a presentation by Congressman Dennis Kucinich. This is not yet a true impeachment hearing, but it is our opportunity to push for one, and it represents a tremendous victory after years of effort by millions of Americans who want to keep the Constitution alive. This never would have happened without your hard work. And we can't let up now! The National Impeachment Network is organizing a rally and asking everyone who can to take a day off for justice and meet at 9 a.m. on Friday July 25th in front of the Rayburn House Office Building on the Independence Avenue side. Bring impeachment shirts and posters! For more information contact ningroup@gmail.com.
David Swanson reports that Veterans for Peace had a meeting on impeachment already scheduled with Conyers for the 25th. He notes that they'll be in town and could perhaps take a lead in organizing people.
He also suggests contacting CodePink for organizing assistance.

"Dear Idiot Democrats,
"Backstage" with Barack????"
Is this a rock concert now?
This is F**KING undignified.
Is this how the democrats are trying to seem hip and cool now?
Get this.....
Bush got elected because people thought they could have a beer with him. That somehow this is a valid method of choosing a President.
It's not, and neither is this.
I don't want to have a party backstage experience with Obama. I want a serious candidate who will win the election and pull us out of this moronic tailspin Bushco has put America in.
What is the matter with you people?"
Now, I'm sure that several, ok, most of the people who tour this fine website that would agree with most of the sentiment "expressed" in this email.
And maybe there's a reason for this much anger directed at the Obama campaign - is a historic moment like this appropriate to be presented like Van Halen's appearance at the US festival?
But whatever the validity of this author's opinion, this is the classic example of how the Left engages in self-destructive behavior when we want to make a point.
I'm certain that Tom McMahon is NOT monitoring his inbox to judge the feedback of this fundraising email, but I'm sure someone is. And by insulting the Party in the first line of the email, the author has guaranteed that his or her email will either be promptly dispatched to the deleted folder, or marked as spam and blocked from any further reception.
In that, it did not accomplish a damn thing, other that to let the author vent some political steam.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Veterans and honor guests, if we want our voices heard among our peers and our enemies, we need to be calm, collected and honest. Hooting and screeching like so many flustered hens only makes the right-wing noise machine's job that much easier.
If we need to make a point on the facts, doing it angry and livid only makes it easier for the Right to dismiss it. Think about it - how many times has our claims about this Deserter President been dismissed as "just the ranting of angry latte-drinking liberal?"
Yes, it's easy, but it works. And we haven't been smart enough to stop doing it.
SO the next time you jump into the fray of political opinion and you want to posts an angry, vicious comment about something that's going on, please follow this bit of wisdom imparted to my by a wise old NCO in Public Affairs:
"Engage Brain before Releasing Mouth."
The peace movement has stood for peace and justice, for ending wars, preventing new ones, and building peace. Our top priority in Washington, D.C., has been ending the funding of the occupation. That work is over for the next year, because Congress has provided that funding.
We can still work against recruitment, we can still educate, we can still agitate, we can still oppose an attack on Iran. But one of our secondary priorities in Washington has been imposing a penalty for the illegal attack on Iraq in order to discourage future attacks on Iran or anywhere else.
We have pushed half-heartedly for impeachment,
with our main lobbying focus on cutting off the money.
Now, at the same time that the money is
a done deal for another year,
the possibility of impeachment is beginning to spark. After over two years of declaring impeachment "off the table," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has relented and suggested that some sort of preliminary hearing be held in the Judiciary Committee - and specifically on the impeachable offense of misleading a nation into war.
If the peace movement is not just a movement against one war or occupation, but a movement for peace, we should push with everything we've got for that (impeachment) hearing to happen, happen soon, and happen well.
We should ask everyone who cares about peace to phone Pelosi and Committee Chairman John Conyers, as well as their own representatives, whom they should ask to introduce their own articles of impeachment.
We've been on a losing streak, brothers and sisters, and the door is cracking open toward a major victory. Let's open that door fully and lead a peaceful march of millions through it.

Last month, Kucinich introduced 35 articles of impeachment against President Bush in the form of a privileged resolution.
Kucinich, a former 2008 Democratic presidential candidate, spent four-hours reading the impeachment articles into the Congressional Record last month. He accused the commander-in-chief of a wide range of high crimes and misdemeanors, such as lying to Congress and the public to win support for the Iraq war.
The impeachment articles introduced by Kucinich last month took place a few days after the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence released a long-awaited report on prewar Iraq intelligence that concluded President Bush and Vice President Cheney knowingly lied to the public and to Congress about Iraq's links to al-Qaeda and the threat the country posed to the U.S. in the aftermath of 9/11.
“These articles of impeachment are about accountability,” Kucinich said. “I think our country is at risk. We’re setting a terrible precedent for future administrations if we choose to turn a blind eye to the crimes committed by this administration."
The House of Representatives referred the Bush articles of impeachment to the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI).
Conyers has yet to release a public statement on the motion, but has in the past not been supportive of impeachment efforts. The resolution to impeach Cheney, which Kucinich presented in April 2007, remains stalled in the committee he chairs.

The time is always right to do what is right. - Martin Luther King, Jr.
I'm sure the goofy Right is happily blogging away, talking about the defeat of liberal gun laws, to new era of individual liberty, and inventing fictional voting records and positions on Democratic Candidates (much like is happening to Mark Udall.)
In a word - whatever.
Because what the Gundamentalists seem to miss is that Gun Laws were not declared unconstitutional - just Washington DC's. In fact, the most überconservative Judge on the Court, "Justice" Scalia, declared quite clearly that those laws are still in effect:
"Nothing in our opinion," Justice Scalia said, "should be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms."
(Quote from the NY Times June 26th, 2008 Online edition.)
So, it's a Supreme Court version of The Seventh Seal - while the Gundamentalists (represented by Death) are busy playing judicial chess with the Supreme Court, the family (America) rides away safe still protected by 99.9% of the gun control laws in the United States.
Even better, the Gundamentalists can no longer argue about 'grey areas' in future guns. Heck, they can't even argue that ANY future gun laws are un-Constitutional - the boundaries have been drawn. And it looks like as long as a law doesn't totally erase that Constitutional Right, anything else is FAIR GAME.
So, let the Gun Kooks on the Right continue to spout their "Win" - we'll just sit back and let them flail about in their delusional state.
From 9News.com:
"NBC's Tim Russert has died of an apparent heart attack after collapsing at the NBC Bureau in Washington, D.C.
Russert, of Buffalo, N.Y., took the helm of the Sunday news show in December 1991 and turned it into the most widely watched program of its type in the nation. His signature trait there was an unrelenting style of questioning.
Washingtonian magazine once dubbed Russert the best journalist in town, and described "Meet the Press" as "the most interesting and important hour on television.
He also wrote best-selling books, "Big Russ and Me," in 2004, and "Wisdom of our Fathers," in 2006.
This year, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Russert also was a senior vice president at NBC. "
We can fill endless posts with debate on his true journalistic neutrality...at times Russert could not resist parroting the same moronic lines the rest of the mainstream media was chanting across the airwaves.
But even in that, Russert brought back intelligent informed programming back to the Sunday Morning Broadcast Wasteland...if it wasn't for his personal tireless efforts at NBC, infotainment would've ruled the TV dial for years to come.
I will miss him...even if at times I did not agree with his journalistic style or integrity.

Well, here we go again...time for another Secretary of Veterans Affairs to resign. This time we find that another arm of the George Bush mis-administration has made a dubious legal interpretation, trampled on the rights and benefits of veterans and is denying any wrong-doing.
You have to read the entire New York Times story to believe the depths of this tragic scenario.
This is a bizarre and deplorable action on the part of the mis-administration of the current occupant of the White House. Refusing to facilitate voter registriation is definately not prohibited by the Hatch Act. It's really disappointing that former Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) remains silent on this controversy.
I realized that this is a very positive development. I'm looking for more "lasts" of anything and everything for the coWH. The case against the mis-administration regarding Iran is particularly damaging.
It's clear that since entering office that the coWH has acted against the best interests of the United States on relations and policies towards Iran; the jumbled focus of his European tour sound bite script. Rather than advancing the best interests of the US, the current mis-administration has consistently played to the advantage of Ahmadi-Nejad and the ruling Iranian radicals. Read More »

Keeping Our Promises: Veterans, Soldiers and their Families
Rand Beers, President and Founder of the National Security Network, former senior White House national security staffer and Vietnam-era Marine, will be the featured speaker at two town hall forums on issues facing the military community: repeat deployments for members of the active-duty Armed Forces, Guard and Reserves, the needs of a growing new population of disabled veterans, and the burdens on military families. Beers combines front-line experience (Rifle Company Commander in Vietnam and 10 years in the White House) with years of briefing our nation’s political leaders and, with the National Security Network, trains and advises candidates and advocates on how to address these issues in today’s political environment. "US Military's Middle East Crusade for Christ
by Robert Weitzel
"They are proselytizing not on behalf of the Constitution of the United States . . . but rather on behalf of some sort of fanatical view of end times. And they are using our army to affect that." -Former Ambassador Joseph Wilson
Last August the watchdog group Military Religious Freedom Foundation foiled a Pentagon plan that would have allowed the shipment of "freedom packages" to soldiers and Marines in Iraq. The parcels were put together by the fundamentalist Christian ministry, Straight Up, and contained Bibles, proselytizing tracts in English and Arabic, and the apocalyptic "Left Behind" computer game, in which Christian Tribulation forces convert or kill infidels-nonbelievers, Muslims and Jews.
On May 1 the Senate approved the promotion of Brigadier General Robert L. Caslen Jr. to Major General. Currently the commandant of cadets at West Point, he will become the commander of the 25th Infantry Division. He is also president of the stridently fundamentalist Officer's Christian Fellowship, whose vision is a "spiritually transformed military, with ambassadors for Christ in uniform, empowered by the Holy Spirit."
General Caslen was promoted despite the Defense Department's recommended disciplinary action against him and several other senior military leaders because they had "improperly endorsed and participated with a nonfederal entity while in uniform" by participating in a promotional video for the Campus Crusade For Christ's Christian Embassy, an evangelical organization that ministers to Beltway politicians and sponsors weekly Bible studies at the Pentagon.
According to the DoD Inspector General's report, one of the generals involved "asserted that Christian Embassy was treated as an instrumentality of the Pentagon Chaplain's office for over 25 years, and had effectively become a 'quasi federal entity.'" Arguably, he believed his participation in the video was in the line of duty.
Considering both the Pentagon's evangelical proclivity and a 2006 Pew survey which found that of the major religious groups in America, evangelicals have the most negative views of Islam and Muslims, the U.S. sniper who was recently caught using the Quran for target practice in the Baghdad neighborhood of Radhwaniya might be excused for thinking the book was a legitimate target upon which to perfect his craft . . . excused for thinking he was acting in the line duty.
And is it any wonder that with evangelicals and fundamentalists at the very top of the military's officer corps -- to say nothing of their Commander in Chief -- that an enlisted Marine was passing out Christian "witnessing coins" inscribed in Arabic at a checkpoint in Fallujah? One side of the coin asked, "Where will you spend eternity?" An evangelical favorite, John 3:16, was on the flip side.
Sheik Adul-Rahman al-Zubaie, a tribal leader in Fallujah who was outraged by the Marine's proselytizing said, "This event did not happen by chance, but it was planned and done intentionally."
While the Marine's proselytizing is not the official policy of the predominately Christian force occupying the predominately Islamic Iraq, it was done "in the line of duty" with a wink and a nod from his chain of command. Think Abu Ghraib!
>From Fort Jackson, the Army's largest basic training facility, where trainees are encouraged to attend Campus Crusade's weekly "God's Basic Training" programs, to the U.S. Air Force Academy where students are pressured to attend the Crusade's weekly "cru" (short for crusade) Bible study, American military personnel are, as Campus Crusade's Scot Blom gloats, "government paid missionaries" when they complete their training.
As the demands of fighting a perpetual war against "radical Islam" begins to strain both the military's resources and the country's resolve, the Pentagon has begun outsourcing larger chunks of the war to private contractors. Predictably, our "government paid missionaries" have become more expensive and much less controllable or accountable.
The Bush administration's favorite contractor, Blackwater, is the most powerful private army in the world. It commands thousands of mercenaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, has over a billion dollars in government contracts, and enjoys complete immunity from prosecution for its theater of operations' conduct.
Blackwater's founder, Erik Prince, a staunchly conservative Catholic, has also served on the board of directors of Christian Freedom International, a crusading missionary organization operating in the overwhelmingly Islamic countries of Sudan, Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Prince envisions an evangelical "end time" role for his warriors: "Everybody carries guns, just like Jeremiah rebuilding the temple in Israel -- a sword in one hand and a trowel in the other."
No one in the last decade has contributed more to end time, apocalyptic evangelism than John Hagee, a televangelist seen by millions of viewers weekly and pastor of the 19,000-member Cornerstone Church. Hagee preaches that in order to bring about the Second Coming of Christ and the Rapture of true believers, Islam first has to be destroyed.
In a 2006 interview with National Public Radio's Terry Gross, Hagee told her, "Those who live by the Quran have a scriptural mandate to kill Christians and Jews." He went on to claim that there are 200 million Muslims waiting for the chance to attack Israel and the United States. From his pulpit, Hagee makes it clear to his congregation and the radio and television audience what they can expect from American Muslims if such an attack ever took place: "While American Muslims live in America, 82 percent are not loyal to America and are not willing to fight and defend America."
In his book, "Jerusalem Countdown - A Warning to the World," Hagee warns that the war between Islam and the West "is a war that Islam cannot and must not win."
John Hagee is not just a mad evangelizing prophet. He is the mad evangelizing prophet who is courted by a war president, a hawkish presidential candidate and members of Congress from both parties. His Islamophobic bilge has trickled down from Capital Hill, through the labyrinthine corridors of the Pentagon, and into the chamber of a sniper's rifle and the hand of a Marine guarding a checkpoint in Fallujah.
Officers in the military are expected to lead by example. Enlisted personnel are expected to follow that example. If the recent incidents at Radhwaniya and Fallujah are not just the acts of renegades, then the chain of command seems to be working the way it was designed."

I find it very strange that an experienced legislator like Kucinich would not call for a vote on floor debate first (as he did with the Cheney Resolution), as opposed to instead calling for a vote to refer the measure directly to committee where he knows that no action will probably be taken, ever.
It is my belief that Kucinich was allowed to introduce the measure by Pelosi with the requirement ( or expectation) that the only vote would be one referring it to committee, which would then allow all House Democrats to claim they voted to study the resolution rather than vote to kill it. It is a smoke screen to make it plain to the voters and the media that the
impeachment issue is dead for good.
Once again the House Democrats prove they are not worthy to call themselves patriots.
The only way to get the House Democrats to honor their oath and protect the Constitution is to make them fear losing their jobs. Of course some of us don't have the willingness and courage to make that happen.

If attempting to impeach the President of the United States isn't "Breaking News", then what is?
"If CNN would have covered this important event, Americans could have tuned into C-Span and understood the many crimes that the Bush administration has perpetrated against the American public.
It is the lack of knowledge of the general public that has allowed President Bush to break our laws with impunity!
It is the enabling of news sources such as CNN that are partially responsible for this criminal administration, and they share in the blame of the many crimes that President Bush is guilty of."
And of course there is ProgressNowAction.org
On Tuesday I sent an email to ProgressNow asking to have my posting about the AOL.com Impeachment Poll placed on the Front Page so that members would have the best chance of knowing about the new legislation to Impeach President Bush, and would have the opportunity to vote in the AOL.com Impeachment Poll while it was still news. We were ignored, but the very next posting was placed on the Front Page, though not near as important as an Impeachment.
If an impeachment resolution isn't something that should get on the Front Page I cannot imagine what would be. How much do these people Hate Our Constitution that they will suppress important political event news. I do not think the word Hate is inappropriate. They have made it very plain that impeachment advocates should just shut up and go away.
Is ProgressNow attempting to dumb-down their members? Keep them in the dark about Bush's crimes? Do they provide this website so Progressives can discuss issues or so they can manipulate the members?
It would have been nice to at least get a reply to our email message.
Impeachment may not occur but it will not fail because of the Republicans but because of the corruption within the Democratic Party and organizations such as this one.

It's been a long, hard-fought campaign, one filled with good moments and bad. And the person picked to win at the start of this race has lost.
It wasn't rigged. It wasn't (terribly) unfair. And at times, it wasn't very civil at all. But the candidate that won earned that victory. Sen. Obama is going to represent the Democratic Party as their candidate for President.
I'm sure that some supporters for Sen. Clinton will hoot and screech a number of petulant threats about sitting out this election, or even carrying out their half-assed threats about voting for Sen. McCain.
SHUT UP!
I remind everyone that was involved in this primary election that they were selecting the Democratic Candidate for President. And unless something secretly changed under Gov. Dean's watch, we didn't change things to be the Hillary Clinton Party.
The process has played out....two states were (lightly) spanked for having an early election. All the candidates had the same access to the press, to donors, and to the issues.
We as a Party have decided that Barack Obama is the Democratic Nominee for President. And unless you're thinking of reforming the Bull Moose party to help loose the November election, you now have a duty as a Democrat to help him win the General Election this fall.
I understand that some of you feel hurt, betrayed, or maybe even the victims of the vast left-wing conspiracy. I've been there - I spend hard hours working for Mike Miles for his Senate Campaign, only to see it end on a Summer night in 2004.
I probably voiced the same threats that the Clintonista's are currently shouting from the rooftops. But in the end, I knew that getting a Democratic Senator elected was more important than my bruised ego.
So, go ahead and sulk....if it didn't hurt, then it wasn't a good fight. Call into Jay Marvin's radio show tomorrow and bitch about the process/results/media/Party. But if you call yourself a Democrat...if you truly believe that 4 more years of the Bush Presidency would destroy this nation, suck it up in a few weeks and get behind the Democratic Nominee for President.
Because the Republican'ts will stoop so low, tell any lie, distort any fact in order to get elected, we cannot leave a single voter behind this fall.
Don't be a Scorched-Earth Democrat.
Waiting for this to happen has been like watching grass grow as Conyers has been negotiating with Rove's lawyers for a year, Will this lead to impeachment?

COLORADO VETS GROUP CALLS FOR
IMPEACHMENT OF CHENEY AND BUSH
Colorado Veterans for America (CVA) today called
for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney
and President George W. Bush.
CVA is a 2,000 member nonprofit group that has endorsed and worked for successful candidacies of U.S. Senator Ken Salazar, U.S. Representative John Salazar, U.S. Representative Ed Perlmutter, Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, and Joe Rice, state representative, House District 38 in Littleton.
Both the President and Vice President repeatedly lied to Congress and the American people to bring us and other nations to war against Iraq and to continue that war, said CVA Acting President Jim Hudson.
And both willfully promoted and attempted to cover up U.S. policies of barbarous torture and brutality leading to death and disability of combatants as well as innocent Iraqi civilians. In doing so, both violated U.S. law, international law, and simple morality. And they undermined the worldwide dignity, integrity, and goodwill earned through the sacrifice of hundreds of thousands of precious Americans lives in earlier just and necessary wars, Hudson added.
CVA's members actively campaign for candidates that share the group's values by making individual contributions, marching with candidates in parades, campaigning door-to-door, phone banking, recruiting volunteers, sponsoring fundraising events in their homes, writing letters-to-the-editor, phoning radio talk shows, conducting press conferences, and holding demonstrations or push-back activities.

Per RawStory.com:
An article in Tuesday's Jerusalem Post claims that US strikes on Iran are imminent.
"US President George W. Bush intends to attack Iran in the upcoming months, before the end of his term, Army Radio quoted a senior official in Jerusalem as saying Tuesday," the Israeli newspaper reports.
Excerpts from article:
#
The official claimed that a senior member of the president's entourage, which concluded a trip to Israel last week, said during a closed meeting that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney were of the opinion that military action was called for.
However, the official continued, "the hesitancy of Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice" was preventing the administration from deciding to launch such an attack on the Islamic Republic, for the time being.
The report stated that according to assessments in Israel, recent turmoil in Lebanon, where Hizbullah de facto established control of the country, was advancing an American attack.

SO! Why are our Colorado Congressmen, especially Rep. Udaall not screaming for Impeachment Hearings?
Rep. john Conyers, Chairman of the US House Judiciary Committee has said that Bush should be impeached if he attacks Iran. So has former Presidential Candidate Senator Joe Biden.
Isn't it time that one of our brave Colorado Congressmen stood up and called for impeachment hearings Before The Killing Starts Anew?????
And where is our ACLU Of Colorado (led by Cathryn Hazouri) when you need them to lead on Impeachment? They are doing a great job for the crazies in Recreate68 but are not protecting Our US Constitution from the Cheney/Bush criminals.

A full explanation of the case of Rep. Vito Fossella (R-N.Y.) is provided by the Hill's Jackie Kucinich in the extended text.
This is more than a corrective swing in the political climate. The radicalization of the GOP has depleted their candidate pipeline of all but the most marginal of fringe characters. Add to this the repeat scandals of GOP incumbents and the result is brand failure.
The retail/consumerism obsessed American populace is arguably on the verge of abandoning the GOP label. Precise issues and programs may not lead the reasons, but a failure in basic values and trust appears to be the key to independents and other voting groups casting their ballots for Democrats in even deeply red districts. One of the more gut-wrenching depravations of the Republican Legislature and Republican Governor of 2003 was the agreement to raid the Colorado Veterans Trust Fund to the tune of $2.3 Million. With the benefit of reports from several sources I've pieced together an "oh really?" tale of the day this fund was restored, with interest. This boosted the Trust Fund by a total of $2.9 Million.
The Grand Junction Sentinel provided the best coverage of last Friday's bill signing. With the benefit of January to May hindsight any meddling or opposition to this legislation is questionable.
http://www.gjsentinel.com/news/content/news/stories/2008/05/16/051708_3a_Vets_bill_signed.html
At the center of the drama are GOP representatives Douglas Bruce and Kevin Lundberg. Back on January 14, 2008 Douglas Bruce became an even greater historical curiosity during morning prayers. Two days later, January 16, it was Bruce who weighed-in as a benefactor of the Veterans Trust Fund cause in the House Finance Committee. it was through Bruce's amendment that approximately $600,000 in interest was added. And, Lundberg who failed with an amendment to paint the pay-back as a new general fund appropriation.
In an additional context of Douglas Bruce and John Kefalas acting in agreement on a bill the Fort Collins, Colorado Rocky Mountian Chronicle originally covered the event.
http://www.rmchronicle.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1872
By the end of the committee hearing Rep. Lundberg has flipped back to the supporter and cast a rare vote with the majority to pass the bill. While Bruce and Kefalas were consistent supporters of the bill, Lundberg's move for fiscal re-packaging is yet another dubious entry in his spotty record.
