From the Southern Poverty Law Center, via Colorado Confidential (warning, foul language):

CoCo's Erin Rosa reports:

One video was obtained by SPLC through e-mail, where the organization says that Robert Crooks, head of the California-based Mountain Minutemen group, mailed several nativist leaders the video and allegedly wrote that "this video shows how to keep a 'Home Depot' parking lot empty."

I think we all knew this day would come. Give me a moment while I pull up my list of Colorado Republican legislators who are Minutemen. I wonder if Minuteman Sen. Dave Schultheis will offer the same sympathy to this victim that he did to the American family with a Hispanic surname involved in that nasty car wreck in Greeley last year?

Tom Tancredo's murderous bastard children. The fruit of a thousand nativist Lou Dobbs diatribes. Years of cultivating xenophobia finally come home to roost in the California desert. Are you proud, haters?

Words seem too little....

this an atrocity! How sad. I am depressed after viewing this.

Vigilantes are Deplorable
By Ralph T Aug 15th 2007 at 1:15 pm MDT
Vigilantes have never been a source of law and order, only violence and hatred. They are too often the pawns of other powerful interests. In this case it's increasingly the fear and hatred agenda of Tom Tancredo, Karl Rove and other neo-con monsters.

If this were real....
By Socrates Aug 20th 2007 at 2:41 pm MDT
....it would be all over the national news, instead of it just being posted on Youtube. Such a thing is so easily faked, and this has no corrorboration. None. Yet you're all ready to go out and lynch people because you THINK that they're the type who MIGHT have had something, however faint and distant, to do with such an incident. What's really scary is how some people are such suckers for propaganda.

And lo and behold.....
By Socrates Aug 20th 2007 at 5:44 pm MDT
...today it is revealed that it IS a fake. Gee, what a surprise. Not.

As always, there is the more accurate facts of the matter (with link):

For the first time, Robert Crooks, leader of California’s nativist extremist Mountain Minutemen, has admitted to filming and posting videos (here and here) that seem to depict an undocumented immigrant being shot on the border. But Crooks now says the video was staged.

“Who in their right mind is going to shoot a smuggler, videotape it, then post it to YouTube?” Crooks asked KGTV 10News in San Diego.

That’s a change from last week, when Crooks, in an E-mail to the Intelligence Report, insisted he neither filmed the video nor posted it to a video-sharing site. A local police spokesman told 10News the video did appear to be fake.

Crooks’ tiny Mountain Minutemen group is one of several armed Minuteman spinoffs now operating on the U.S.-Mexico border between Campo and Jacumba, Calif. Crooks told a reporter that he and friends made the fake video during talks about President George Bush’s proposed immigration reform bill.

Crooks had a number of other nativist extremist leaders convinced that his video was real and would damage their movement. In response to Crooks’ border shooting video, Jeff Schwilk, leader of the nativist extremist San Diego Minutemen, told his supporters he had a media strategy in place, “to minimize damage to the Minuteman movement.” Jim Gilchrist, director of another Minuteman group, banned his own members from contact with Crooks and his group and said that he would no longer provide Crooks’ group with supplies as in the past.

Well, either he filmed it as some part of psychotic plot to double-cross his own extremist hater buddies or he's lying, which he already did in either case. I'd like to see independent analysis of the tape besides one local police jurisidiction. Maybe a court order to see his editing equipment and have him duplicate his production? They'd do it if it was Jonbenet Ramsey on the tape, wouldn't they?

I agree that it would be really stupid to videotape a murder and then put it on youtube. But consider the rebel-flag waving human debris (as Rush likes to say) we're talking about.
