Librarian carrying McCain=Bush sign kicked out of McCain Event:

McCain Town Hall attendees get escorted out again

For Immediate Release
July 7, 2008
Contact: Michael Huttner
303-931-4547 cell

DENVER, Colo.-On orders from Senator John McCain's security detail, Denver police escorted a 61-year-old woman away who was waiting in line to attend a so-called  town hall meeting with McCain that was billed as open to the public.

Carol Kreck, who works as a librarian in Denver, held a homemade sign reading "McCain = Bush." On orders from McCain's security detail, police cited her for trespassing and escorted her to the sidewalk. She was told if she returned she would be arrested.

"And all I did was carry a sign that said McCain = Bush," Kreck said. "And for everyone who voted for Bush, I don't see why it's offensive to say McCain = Bush."

This episode by McCain's Secret Service appears to be a rerun of McCain's 2005 town hall in Denver with President Bush in which the Secret Service had three Denver citizens removed from an "open" event where McCain was campaigning with Pres. Bush for his plan to privatize social security.

McCain and Bush:  The same record on the economy

Senator McCain was in town to speak about his economic agenda, outlining more of the same failed policies of George W. Bush.  McCain's plan, like Bush's gives break after break to millionaires and wealthy corporations, but does little for middle class families.

Bush said, "The fundamentals are strong. We're just in a rough patch." (Los Angeles Times, 2/2/08).

McCain said, "I still believe our fundamental underpinnings of our economy are strong." (CNN 1/22/08).  McCain actively supports Bush's failed policies.  According to Congressional Quarterly, McCain supported President Bush a majority of the time-supporting Bush as much as 100 percent in 2008 and 95 percent in 2007. [CQ Voting Studies, Accessed, 5/15/08]

The Wall Street Journal reported that McCain policies will "explode deficit" or result in "unprecedented spending cuts equal to one-third of federal spending on domestic programs." [WSJ, 4/22/2008]

McCain and Bush:  The same record on tax cuts

Bush said, "We need to make the tax cuts permanent." (President's Speech on the economy at the EEOB, 2/19/04.)

McCain said, "I'll make the Bush tax cuts permanent.... I've said 500 times that I want the tax cuts to be made permanent." (NBC "Meet the Press," 1/27/08). McCain makes Bush's tax cuts permanent, and calls for a $1.7 trillion tax cut for corporations according to a Center for American Progress Action Fund report.

McCain's corporate tax cuts would give $3.8 billion in tax breaks to the 5 biggest oil companies and $1.9 billion in tax breaks to the 10 biggest health insurers.  Meanwhile, families who are struggling to pay the bills get much less.

America's top 5 oil companies Exxon, Shell, Valero and others would stand to receive a $3.8 billion tax break, while the average family might save $44.40 from McCain's gas holiday.

McCain Supported Bush 100 Percent in 2008, 95 Percent in 2007

McCain Supported Bush 100 Percent in 2008 and 95 Percent in 2007. According to Congressional Quarterly, McCain supported President Bush a majority of the time-supporting Bush as much as 100 percent in 2008 and 95 percent in 2007. According to CQ, "CQ tries to determine what the president personally, as distinct from other administration officials, does and does not want in the way of legislative action. This is done by analyzing his messages to Congress, news conference remarks and other public statements and documents." [CQ Voting Studies, Accessed, 5/15/08]

What Constitution?
By Bill Jul 7th 2008 at 5:32 pm MDT
The Supreme Court just affirmed your right to carry a gun. Maybe next the black robes will extend that to carrying a sign in a public place.
I guess the words on it must be profane?
Re: What Constitution?
By Jason Jul 8th 2008 at 7:56 pm MDT
Well down here in Florida, specifically in St Pete, they arrested some guys for carrying protest signs outside these stupid little "free speech zones". Part of the police complaint was that the sign was a bit too big. So in addition to the convictions and to cover their illegal tracks, the city fathers amended the law to say that no sign bigger than the carrier's torso is allowed! St Petersburg= No free speech!

DPAC is public property!
By Blake Couch Jul 7th 2008 at 6:17 pm MDT
I found some info on DPAC and DCPA, and the incidents at the McCain thing this morning occurred on PUBLIC PROPERTY.

Link

The DPAC encompasses all the buildings at the 14th and Curtis site and is OWNED by the City and County of Denver. The site where we were threatened by the police with arrest this morning is NOT PRIVATELY OWNED. The DCPA is merely a user of the property and had no right to do what they did.

Librarian?
By Kevin Jul 7th 2008 at 6:39 pm MDT
There was a Carol Kreck who wrote for the Denver Post for years. I wonder if this is the same person?
Re: Librarian?
By Blake Couch Jul 7th 2008 at 6:51 pm MDT
You must be thinking of Dick Kreck, who left the Post about a year ago.

Maybe they're related...
Re: Librarian?

Sorry, my mistake ... I just read elsewhere that she was once married to Dick Kreck, and that she used to write for the Post as Carol Bell.

What about the peas-in-the-pod guy
By Maggie Jul 7th 2008 at 7:31 pm MDT
So the sign-carrying librarian gets booted...but the guy dressed up as a pea-pod with Bush and McCain as adjoining peas doesn't? Huh. I guess reading IS fundamental.
Re: What about the peas-in-the-pod guy
By Blake Couch Jul 7th 2008 at 7:36 pm MDT
No, actually, I was given the choice by the police either to take off the pea pod costume or be arrested and removed. They did let me stay there after I took it off (you can see me standing with it under my arm in the photo), and I put it back on later after returning to the sidewalk along 14th.
Re: What about the peas-in-the-pod guy

Thanks. Rest assured that even under your arm, the pea-pod retains its power to impress.

So what?
By Bob Jul 7th 2008 at 7:47 pm MDT
You don't think the same thing would happen at an Obama rally if there was somebody causing a distraction? Puleezzz. The fact you *don't* see this that often at an Obama rally only speaks more to the maturity of Republicans. No doubt this librarian was a Democrat. Only they pull stupid stuff like that.
Librarian +1, Bob -1
By McBush Jul 8th 2008 at 2:07 am MDT
So Bob, why get your panties all bunched up when comparing McCain to Bush?
Your attempts to berate a 61 year old female librarian for holding a sign displaying "Bush=McCain" are extremely mature.

Glad to see the Republican ideology is represented on this website. You do your Party justice.

Good riddance
By J 2 The B Jul 7th 2008 at 7:50 pm MDT
Good for McCain. He is holding an event to showcase his policies and this old rabblerouser shows up for the specific intent of making a scene.

Let's not kid ourselves, the "open" events in both campaigns are not truly open. Just like Obama threw the Muslims off of the stage at his Michigan event, this is the same thing. They want an event to go smoothly, they don't need some old 60's throwback wingnut ruining it for the rest of the audience.

Maybe she can jump on the Obama bus, unless she is just a "typical white person" like his grandmother, in that case the sight of the big black Barack might just scare the life out of her.
Re: Good riddance
By norm Jul 7th 2008 at 11:47 pm MDT
By your words, "they don't need some old 60's throwback wingnut ruining it for the rest of the audience", you clearly overreacted. More noticeably you misrepresented his age. It's like you wanted to describe McCain who was more likely to be the oldest in the gathering. A 60 year old is yong enough to be McCain's offspring. Especially so for womaniser. Such traits express themselves as early as age 9.
I hope this helps.
Re: Good riddance
By Frank White Jul 8th 2008 at 9:09 am MDT
What about the rights of the other people there to hear what McCain has to say? You don't care about the rights of people, just about implementing your fascist agenda to make everyone dependent on the government.
Re: Good riddance
By EddieD Jul 8th 2008 at 9:50 am MDT
Dude, what? Holding up a sign somehow makes it impossible for McSame to communicate his views? Sorry, man, but we have a right in this country to express dissent (or at least, we had). Especially on public property. The security detail ought to be brought up on charges.
Re: Good riddance
By hank Jul 8th 2008 at 10:56 am MDT
*Public* - which is why she was escorted to the *sidewalk* Just because the venue was supposed to be "open" doesn't mean it was on public property.
Re: Good riddance

WRONG - NO SIGNS ALLOWED!!!!
Re: Good riddance
By mike torrance Jul 9th 2008 at 8:45 am MDT
Public property when rented out to a private organization is usually under the direction of the renter. In this case, was this either (A) a private meeting organized and paid for by McCain's group or (B) a meeting organized by your city (or other non-political body) for all citizens to attend. If (A) then I believe they had every right to ask this woman and pea pod man to leave the premises (as did the Obamma campaign do with the Moslems ladies at his rally. If (B), then the lady had every right in my opinion to display the sign (as also did pea pod person to appear in his costume). Also the muslim women would have had the same rights at the obamma meeting. To me, the removal of the muslim women was a much more egregious act than this lady being removed. But I really don't hear much from the Democrats apologizing for that action. By the way I am a republican, always have been and always will be.
Re: Good riddance
By Marsha Jul 9th 2008 at 11:11 am MDT
The two Muslim women at the Obama meeting were not asked to leave the premises -- they were simply not allowed to sit in camera range behind Senator Obama. This was the action of an overly zealous and probably panicky volunteer worker -- not anyone from the campaign itself.

It was clearly heard in the tape shot at the scene that the order for the removal of the three orderly protesters came from the Secret Service. These people work for the Government -- not for McCain. If the McCain campaign can't handle legal and orderly protest, they shouldn't be having government employees do their dirty work for them!

The world is learning
By Nate Jul 7th 2008 at 7:55 pm MDT
And the world is learning, that even in the "greatest democracy" of the world.. powers that be can do as they please, manipulating the rules to control thought. Rupert Murdoch's manipulating empire is much scarier, but it is sad that local government can not distinguish the difference between right & wrong either.

Make this a test case
By Satyagraha Jul 7th 2008 at 8:11 pm MDT
I hope that the ACLU and other organizations back her in court and get a permanent injunction to prohibit future police actions of this kind.
If you've read articles(today on MYFOX) from Mpls and St.Paul arrests are already being made of people expressing their 1st Ammendment rights.
With the conventions coming, we will all have front row seats on the Constitution in action...
at the convention and in the street.
Rush's dream of "operation chaos" may become reality if 61 year old librarians are ticketed for trespass on public grounds for a simple sign.
I guess those that lead the anti Patriot Act movement(refusing to turn in names of people that check out books from a library) should also be the ones leading us in our 1st Admendment cases.
Re: Make this a test case
By Doug in Mount Vernon Jul 8th 2008 at 2:12 pm MDT
I wholehearedly agree!

I saw Spamalot last year in this very place. It is a PUBLIC city-owned venue.

This woman's constitutional right to free speech and expression was CLEARLY violated. As was the peas in a pad gentleman. What right do law enforcement have to curb the free speech of citizens who are doing NOTHING but existing in the face of their own expression, not being disruptive or causing any harm.

This is not my country any more. I am ashamed.

Freedom of speech
By carol h. Jul 7th 2008 at 8:13 pm MDT
Freedom of speech and freedom to protest have long since flown. They flew under Johnson and Nixon during the vietnam war.

When police move protestors away from the site of a political event, they do it to save the President or the person trying to be elected to office. The President must not be embarrassed by someone telling him how lousy he is. It is the same for McCain. A visiting dictator must not be offended by someone telling the truth. No one seems to mind until it is them being hustled away. In fact strictly speaking from the Constitution the police are breaking the law. We are supposed to have the right to assemble. And when they move protestors away a mile or so from the event they break the Constitution.

The fact is Americans are sheep. Cowed, sleep walking sheep. They value nothing, because they know nothing about the Constitution except for a few isolated truths. Americans don't know a fraction of what they should know. Which accounts for the reason they don't demonstrate. They are willing to give up their rights without a whimper. And they don't understand anyone willing to demand what the Constitution promises.

It has been forty years or more since public schools eliminated teaching the Constitution. And the end result is an ignorant, electorate. We are the most ill informed people in the world. And this apathy would not happen in Mexico. When they election was protested for weeks. Out into the streets, people by the thousands took to the strees. This has not been done since the Vietnam war.

We have reached the point where dissention and accountability regarding our government is now treason. Now any demanding of truth is anti-American. We have the government we deserve. Fascist, authoritarian, duplicitous, theocracy, oligarchy.

1.fascist-A movement or regime that exalts a militaristic, centalized autocratic government.

2.theocracy-a government run by officials regarded as divinely inspired.

3. oligarchy-a government with all the power resting in the hands of the few.

Now what part of this is not relevant to our situation? It is not enough to simply vote anymore. Activism is the only answer to a government that denies basic freedom to it's citizens. If you want to go quietly into a dictatorship, you can. We are already on the way. Or you can save your own democracy by doing what this lady is doing. Hold the bastards accountable. Hold your legislators accountable to you. Vote them out of office.

If you really don't mind having your mail read, your email read, your phone conversations listened to, your privacy violated, then by all means keep your mouth closed. And if you think all this spying is the result of 9/11, think again. Bush was spying on Americans seven months before 9/11.

So go ahead. Give up your rights. But don't think you can get them back. America will always be in danger or under the gun, as it were. The value of the Constitution and our rights is how we are protected while the danger exists.

Once you give up your rights how do you get them back? Do you wait and hope for the goodwill of your government? What is the cut off point? Just suppose we as a people believe it is time to get them back and the government says no, not yet. So when? How do you force them to give back what you have let them take?

Without habeas corpus, without the right to privacy, without the right to free speech and the right to demonstrate what do you have? NOTHING.

I do not intend to willingly give up my rights for one day, not one hour without fighting. This librarian deserves a pat on the back. Respect.
Re: Freedom of speech
By Jeanne B. Jul 7th 2008 at 11:19 pm MDT
Carol, I agree with almost everything you say here, except this: "Out into the streets, people by the thousands took to the strees. This has not been done since the Vietnam war."

We HAVE protested by the HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS all over this country against the Iraq War. I was among the nearly 1/2 million who marched on the Capitol in Washington, DC back in September '05.

It was briefly mentioned on the M$M with the generic, accepted "reportable" figure of "tens of thousands." That march was only one of countless marches where there have been "tens of thousands" gathered to protest.

Just because the media never gives us the "airplay" doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Don't let the propaganda convince you that we are mostly apathetic. Sure, too many are, but the rest of us are being ignored and/or silenced.

I hope Ms. Kreck can get this ticket thrown out. Jeez - these republicans. What a bunch of weenies.
Re: Freedom of speech
By don k. Jul 9th 2008 at 4:09 am MDT
carol, you are so right it makes me sick, sheep, jackasses with blinders on, lazy, we have to wake up, take a good look at whats going, it is right there, they are noy trying to hide what they are doing, they just know that they can get away with it, we have to stop them or it is going to be to late.

my hat is off to the lady with the sign, i am fed up, how many of our people have died for us to have and keep our freedom, whatever it takes, we have to protect our rights, one way or another we must get rid of the people taking them from us, and we have every right to do so, the time is now.
Re: Freedom of speech
By Marsha Jul 9th 2008 at 8:05 am MDT
I was amazed a couple years ago when Bush visited my town to fund-raise for the local Republican U.S. Representative. For some reason, Security DIDN'T move us (100+ protesters) away from where Bush could see us. He went right past me and my sign that read "BUSH: PROOF THAT A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE IS A DANGEROUS THING" on one side, and "BUSH: SO MANY ISSUES, SO LITTLE MIND" on the other.

I hope Ms. Kreck has a good Constitutional lawyer to represent her -- if so, I can't imagine that the case won't be thrown out.

Trespass on public property
By deliverance Jul 7th 2008 at 9:29 pm MDT
You are trespassing when you no longer have permission to be on the property. Perhaps it was public property but it was reserved for a private event. She should have stood on the road with her sign. Not to mention they brought the cameras and instigated the incident. I hope she enjoys her ten minutes.
Re: Trespass on public property
By Private event? Jul 7th 2008 at 10:11 pm MDT
It will take you about 10 seconds to google the news reports that it was not a private event. It was open to the public.
Re: Trespass on public property
By Blake Couch Jul 7th 2008 at 10:12 pm MDT
You're wrong on virtually every aspect of it. It was definitely public property. It was a public event, not a private one. We instigated nothing. We stood in line quietly, just like everyone else.

Is FreeRepublic shut down tonight for some reason?

I read in this comment thread somebody comparing this to Obama and the Muslim request, etc. Two different things! Here, you have the power of the state (McCain's security detail and Denver PD) telling someone they can't enter a function - open to the public - with a sign!

This is what we used to see in Moscow circa 1970.

Pathetic.

God am I sick of hearing "McCain does this, McCain does that!". I don't support McCain, but this just gets old. I bet if it were a sign saying, "Obama=Bush" people would applaud something like this.

Either way, it is public property. She has her right to stand there, which I will agree with you all. But seriously, it is just plain childish and immature to keep going and going on about how bad McCain is. We get it, he is a bad candidate, vote for Obama, etc. I'll tell you what, I'll vote for Obama as soon as these people shut their traps.

1> she was OUTSIDE with a sign. She had not gone inside yet.

2> She is a taxpayer (one assumes) so the public venue belongs to her as well. As long as she is not being destructive, she has every right to be there along with the rest of the public. How can she be tresspassing if there are thousands of others there who are not? They ought to ticket EVERYONE THERE in that case!

3> The Supreme Court deemed that a sign is free speech granted by the Constitution.

There is nothing right with this scenario. If I were her, I'd sue.

Action?
By TheBlackTruth Jul 8th 2008 at 8:10 am MDT
When are we going to stop seeing dozens of stories that just show the victims of our tryannical government and start showing the aftermath where we hold our public servants accountable by bringing court actions against them? Every single case we see of this sort of blatant disregard for individual rights should be followed up by a suit for deprivation of rights protected by the constitution. Until we fight back, this sort of thing will continue to happen and get worse.

Is she going to go to court?
By COwoman Jul 8th 2008 at 10:09 am MDT
I would like to find out if she is going to court, because I would like to show up and protest the ticket.
This was an event open to the public, therefore she was invited. This was on property that is paid for by my taxes as I am a Denver resident.

I called Hickenlooper's office and they were aware of the situation and promised that they were looking into it.

Its quite interesting as a foreigner to watch your country implode. I dont wish for the demise of the US, but I think its inevitable. I just hope you dont decide to pull the rest of the world down with you.

This was planned...

Could this be scripted any better? That's because it was scripted. This was planned. The video/documentation etc... so ridiculous!

The poor old lady! haha

two peas in a pod

the best part about the picture is the slightly more subtle version of mccain=bush; the bean pod in the back ground with bush and mccain's faces as peas.

Free Speech Next Right to Go?
By hope4truth Jul 8th 2008 at 12:27 pm MDT
McCain can run but he can't hide from George
Bush and his failed policies! Now we see he also
doesn't believe in free speech! This whole election so far seems to be that way. Somebody
says something and they have to apologize. But,
hey, that's okay! We live in AMERICA where we
have the right to free speech, don't we? Or do
we? Everyone is so PC that free speech is getting
thrown out the window along with habeus corpus and properly executed search warrants and oh, yeah, Torture is okay now! Give me a break, anyone who votes for McCain must be willing to live in a communist country cuz that's what it is
going to be soon if we aren't watchful and smart about who we elect to every office and position in the government! PEACE!

Did anyone take time to consider that McCain had nothing to do with this? It was a security detail trying to eliminate any hostility. I'm sure McCain isn't so shallow as to fear a piece of cardboard.

McCain had nothing to do with her removal. He gives people an open forum to speak and all these Obama hacks show up with their scripted comments. They were so stupid they had to read of cue cards provided by Obama's campaign people. At least Gorgette spoke from the heart. This Kreck woman blindly held a sign that was handed to hear by the Obama people. She admitted that much on the Caplis/Silverman show. Mindless idiot?

The Obamafiles gathered across the street with their idiot McBush signs high fiving each other for interrupting a legitimate Town Hall. At least MCain had the balls to speak in an open forum that wasn't scripted. Barack Hussien Obama personally had the Muslim women removed from the camera shot.

Hypocrisy rules with him and his ilk.

Why is it when it's Republicans speaking their opinion it's an "open forum" but when it's Democrats speaking their opinion they're just receiving "scripted comments" from higher up?

Talk about hypocrisy.

And how can you "interrupt a town hall" from across the street? Do the Democrats have scary telekinetic powers or something?

Incidentally, escorting out anybody expressing an undesirable opinion is by definition NOT an "open forum".

Okay -- I'll speak slowly and clearly for those of you who weren't paying attention.

The two Islamic women were kept from sitting within camera range behind Senator Obama by a panicky volunteer worker who over-reacted and thought it might look bad. Senator Obama had nothing to do with it.

Are we all clear on this now?
Re: Free Speech Next Right to Go?
By Joey Jul 11th 2008 at 11:09 pm MDT
Ok, on that note if it was a MCCain "panicky volunteer worker who over-reacted and thought it might look bad, does that then make it okay in your book?

I am speaking real slowly as well.

By Daniel Jul 9th 2008 at 10:38 am MDT
Oh please, "McCain had nothing to do with this". Please, his campaign people certainly did.

I'm for neither candidate, but let's keep it real people. The Republicunts can't take a hit and neither can the Dems. so it's hypocrisy at its best.

Like an earlier post, I, too, shall write in Ron Paul. True democracy has been lost in this country and it's high time we face those facts. People get angry (dem or rep), because it pushes a button in their circulatory system. Knee jerk reactions rather than actually considering the facts!

Ugh!! Where's my martini, oh there it is.

Talk amongst yourselves.

The inevitable rush to judgement
By Oyate Jul 8th 2008 at 2:03 pm MDT
It's not clear to me whether this woman was a "liberal" or "conservative". It's not clear to me what the legal justification for removing her might have been. But the whole thing seems to be fuel for the hate fire.

To those of you displaying intolerance and hate on these boards, don't blame the cops, don't blame the woman, blame yourselves.
