An Invitation...
Dear Friend of Soulforce Denver:
On May 1st, 2005, despite freezing weather, nearly 1000 people joined Soulforce for the "MAYDAY Family Picnic & Protest" outside the entrance to Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs, Colorado. 60%-70% of those passionate, committed participants were from Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region. Their sacrifice was integral to the success of Mayday! 2005. But since then, James Dobson has amplified his efforts to impose his narrow interpretation of the Bible on the entire nation; thereby jeopardizing the integrity of our U.S. Constitution as well as the civil liberties and religious freedom of all Americans.
That's why Soulforce is gathering thousands of people for a nonviolent direct action on July 22, 2006. Actor and activist Chad Allen and Judy Shepard, Executive Director of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, will lead a short march from Rampart Park to Focus on the Family, and Broadway star Billy Porter will perform his amazing and powerful evening concert of jazz, rhythm, and blues in front of Dobson's complex. Lifting our voices in word and song, we will gather to show the public the loving and vibrant spirit of our community and peacefully call all fair-minded Americans to resist injustice. Throughout history, fundamentalists have misused religion to discriminate against people of color, women, and interracial families. Now, gays and lesbians are the target of their oppression. Together, we must peacefully demand that America learn from history and end religion based discrimination.
Our goal is for at least 3,000 people to join the march on July 22nd, and we are asking for your help in mobilizing the local community to make the 1000 Watt March, Vigil & Concert an even bigger success than last year's rally. Would you take some time to visit www.soulforce.org to learn about nonviolence, become informed about James Dobson's defamatory rhetoric, register for this direct action, or even sponsor a family? We also hope you would be willing to help us publicize the 1000 Watt March, Vigil & Concert by distributing the 1000 Watt promotional flyer available at the Soulforce website to your associates and friends:
