Caucussing...

Got my first taste last night... after twelve years living in Colorado, one of the candidates actually called my home and told us everything we needed to know about how... and where to be, what to do and when. After twelve years living in Colorado. I guess if you hang around long enough...

Now I would have thought I was derelict in my duty, or maybe just lazy... until they announced in their group precinct meeting that they were used to only seeing about fifteen people... our precinct alone had sixty-six people show up.

Of course, you had the usual grousing about waiting in the cold... because the lines were long and check in was slow... but as I pointed out to a couple of people in line, they only had two years to prepare for this.

And you could really tell where people's priorities were... most of us left after we selected our candidate for president... partially because the process of reading the rules took so long, and partially because with my back and the missus ankle, the two hours we stood and the distance back to our car in the cold was a bit much for both of us at our age.

You could also pick out the 'business as usual' Democrats from the 'we got to do something about this crap' people. The newbies, as I referred to the folks attending for the first time, many not much younger than yours truly, voted four to one for our candidate... and you could see the BAS Dems expressions sinking, when the second vote showed that the straw poll uncommitteds went with the majority.

I was very pleased that the young people in the room far from being intimidated were very vocal in the support of the their candidates and ISSUES. Maybe there's hope for this country yet.

Heartwarming

I felt the same kinda thing at the HD6A caucus. My precinct had 150 people and it gave you a great feeling knowing that everyone was excited and active about politics again (just like back in the Nixon era. Coincidence?) I have a lot of faith in the kids coming up. Time to get the vermin out of Washington!

I share your sentiment about the vermin... but you know, we've been living in our old home about ten years, we've been fighting field mice every winter... in the summer, no problem, in the winter, first snow fall and their back chewing on the studs and my motorcycle's wiring. Politicians are kind of like that... between elections they don't bother you, but come election time they're in the election mode, chewing up the process and leaving a mess. Unfortunately you can't hire a political exterminator to deal with the pests. It is good to see young people becoming activists again. An enthusiastic and active voter base is the closest thing to political exterminators we have.

A lot of people...100+ from just our precinct #608, HD6A.

Even though it was cold out- about 15 degrees, there was a line out the doors of Dora Moore school when I walked up (7:10 or so)and the people in line seemed to be very enthusiastic about coming to this caucus.

The atmosphere was one of a great need to shift this country into a country that we, liberals/progressives/democrat s, want to live in. A country that is free and open to all. A country that is not about fear and loathing and materialism but about the becoming better people that live up to the ideals in our founding documents of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence. We are a people that fears nothing- not even death because our founders faced death and did not cower or back down.

We are a part of a tidal wave of light that will replace the dark blinding fear that Mr. Bush and his ilk use to stifle the spirit of the people who live in America.
