Stop Piņon Canyon expansion: protect property rights in SE Colorado
The Pentagon is seeking to expand the Piņon Canyon Military Maneuver Site into Las Animas, Bent, Baca, Pueblo and Otero counties in Southeastern Colorado. Thousands of Coloradans will be uprooted from their homes if the Pentagon condemns and takes the proposed 418,000 acres.
Pentagon officials have shown that they will strong arm farmers and ranchers to take private property without due process. When Piņon Canyon was established in 1983, half of its land was taken by condemnation. Recently, a Pentagon spokesperson said that the military "will not give up its legal right" to bring their lawyers and take private property. (Denver Post, 2/15/07)
The people of southeast Colorado support the military, but the Pentagon hasn't even shown that they need this land.
We will not let the Pentagon force people from their homes and destroy this land. We join citizens in this region in opposition to the expansion of the Piņon Canyon Military Maneuver Site.
